India’s rich biodiversity is a vital lifeline against climate change. However, habitat loss, pollution, and shifting weather patterns are pushing ecosystems toward critical stress. Protecting this natural heritage while adapting to a warming world is essential for survival and long-term prosperity. The path forward is rooted in coexistence. Forest-dependent communities are becoming conservation stewards. Urban areas are integrating native plant species to reduce heat, improve cooling, and support pollinators. Farmers are reviving traditional seed varieties that are resilient to droughts and pests, reducing dependence on vulnerable monocultures. These actions align with SDG 15 (Life on Land), strengthening both ecological and human resilience. For communities, biodiversity acts as a natural shield. Diverse crops enhance food security, while intact forests regulate water cycles and reduce heatwave intensity. The stakes are high, but so is the potential for transformation. By recognizing biodiversity as a key climate ally, India can shift from vulnerability to vitality, where healthy ecosystems support resilient communities and adaptation begins with preservation.
